Phase 1, Post 2: Medical Discrimination in Pop Culture

Suits

Suits is a show about a hot shot Manhattan lawyer who takes on a fraud as his new associate. The two of them become the best duo winning cases left and right. When it gets to Season 5 a lot has happened and Mike and Harvey are still as close as ever. However, both of their characters have grown a lot since Season One. This season, Harvey is forced to face his emotions and his past all while he feels his firm being taken away from him. All of this stress and previous traumas led him to have a series of panic attacks in the show. It starts with him at his Therapists office reliving his panic attacks. I think this show is really amazing because it tackles the truth of the fact that men also have feelings and anxiety and are allowed to feel the same pain as women. For a long time, I think that anxiety and panic attacks were viewed as things that only happened to women and that men weren't "allowed" to have them or they were too "strong". I think Suits does a great job showing that this bias towards only women having anxiety as totally not true and sexist. It's one of the only shows I have seen that shatters the gender type of break downs and panic attacks by having a man going through it all.
