Phase 1, Post 4: Taking Care of Brooklyn - Medical Biases?

The first image that stood out to me was the portrait of Dr. Susan Smith McKinney Steward. It is crazy that the first black woman doctor in New York State was in 1921. This is because the first woman doctor, Elizabeth Blackwell, got her medical degree in 1849 in NY State. This shows that there was just an unbelievable amount of racism and bias towards African American Women, especially from what I read in Chapter 3 of Medical Bondage even that as many years before. This also relates to the second image of the nurses in front of the “ambulance”. The caption is “Generations of nurses cared for Brooklynites across this diverse borough”, however the nurses and the drivers all white which does not represent the diverse community.

Image 6 also makes me think that there is some bias in the poster. To me it seems like the poster is geared towards people who are drinking sugary drinks. The title “Are you pouring on the pounds” which is geared to people who may be on the heavier side. To me, this poster seems somewhat offensive as it just attacks these people that are drinking sugary drinks. The thing is, these drinks are so cheap and for people who may not have that much money, it could be the only source of drink they have. This poster seems like it is biased towards poorer people and instead of giving them advice of how to combat it or where to go for help, it just makes fun of them.

The first image of the ship that discusses how many people died didn’t show obvious medical bias at first. But, when I started doing more research I realized that there were most probably prisoners that were locked in the bottom of the ships who were not given the medical care they needed. An article that I found out about how prisoners were doomed from the start because of “rampant disease, rotten food, contaminated water, infestations of lice, and suffocating heat or frigid cold”. In class we talked about prisoners who were vulnerable populations which is also evidence day this picture.
